General Southwest Harbor Local
Information and FAQ
Located on the southwestern side of Mount Desert Island (nicknamed the less trampled “Quietside”), the town of Southwest Harbor is thought to be a historically romantic icon of seafaring coastal life. It is ranked as one of the top ten commercial fishing harbors in the state of Maine. Some of the world’s most spectacular sailboats and yachts are built by more than ten boat builders on the island. The small town has the perfect mix of harbor life, history, Maine crafts, shopping and restaurants that fulfill a tourist’s needs.
Picnicking needs - Food/Wine/Sundries
We have a small variety of sundries if you have forgotten anything, but should you need to purchase anything, Carroll Drug Store is just up the street on Village Green Way off Main Street; Southwest Food Mart is just North of town off Main Street (Route 102 at that point); Sawyers Specialties, a guest favorite on Main Street has a wonderful selection of wines and cheeses; Sawyers Market, also on Main Street, is a small gourmet grocer with a nice selection of deli meats and breads; Little Notch Cafe on Main Street is a great sandwich cafe for eat in and carry out; and Eat-A-Pita has huge pita sandwiches stuffed with fresh veggies and various meats for eat in and carry out. If you're looking for more selections of beer and wine, The Liquor Locker on Seal Cove Road is just about a mile north on Main Street with a large selection for you.
If you will be arriving late evening, depending on the season many area restaurants close early, so keep this in mind. Call us should you need help. This is a smoke-free and pet-free inn. We do not have laundry facilities, however, there is a Laundromat just up the street from us.
Free Private Parking
There are 8 private parking spaces directly in front of the inn (1 space per room). Please keep this in mind when pulling in so that all guests are able to park in our lot local granite spacers delineate the spots.
Southwest Harbor and Local Area Events
There are a variety of events that take place in and around town. Art shows/exhibits in June & July are popular. Come for Oktoberfest around Columbus Day weekend and try some of our wonderful local micro-brews and lots of food; or come for the Quietside Festival in July (shown right); or for the frequent walking history tours around town. Help congratulate the runners in the MDI Marathon each October as they cross the finish line in Southwest Harbor. We keep on top of these events - just inquire for more details.
The 1999 Stephen King motion picture, "Storm of the Century" was filmed in part in Southwest Harbor (intersection in photo below). The Maine fishing village in the film was located on a fictitious island but we recognize our quaint town. There were a couple of quick shots of the Kingsleigh Inn...the slow motion button is a great tool. Watch the movie and see if you can recognize the buildings and businesses included as part of the set!
The weather in Maine can vary a great deal. Daytime temperatures can be anywhere from 10-20 degrees warmer than in the evening. Just be sure to bring with you a lightweight jacket as well as layers. It's also a good idea to bring a rain shoe, just in case. We do have a few rain ponchos and umbrellas we can lend to our guests (although not enough to go around). And, don't forget to use bug spray if you go hiking - we have them to prep before you venture into the woods.
The humidity levels remain relatively low even during our warmest months - such a bonus!
In the autumn, leaves usually begin to change color in late September and peak around mid-October.
Arriving By Air
Bangor International Airport is the closest international airport is about an hour from us. The Bar Harbor Hancock County Airport is only about 20 minutes from us, however, they have very limited daily flights. Portland International Jetport is about 3 1/2 hours from us, but frequently offers more reasonable flights than Bangor. You may also choose to fly into Boston, MA or Manchester, NH which offer the most reasonable flights but both are about 5 hours from here.
